A Gratitude Reflection

Before You Ask Again,
Pause and Say Thank You

A short reflection on gratitude, remembrance, and giving thanks to God.

It is often easier to ask God for help than to return and give thanks after He has helped us.

When we are in trouble, our need is loud. Pain makes us pray. Fear makes us humble. Lack makes us desperate. But once prayer is answered, comfort can make us forgetful.

This is one of the great weaknesses of the human heart: we remember God quickly in crisis, but we may forget Him slowly in comfort.

The Bible gives us a powerful picture in the story of the ten lepers.

“One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him.”
— Luke 17:15-17

Ten people cried out for mercy.
Ten people received healing.
Only one returned to give thanks.

That story is not just about leprosy. It is about the human heart.

Many people know how to cry, “Lord, help me.”
Fewer remember to say, “Lord, thank You.”

Why Giving Thanks Can Be Harder

Asking comes from need; thanksgiving comes from remembrance

When we need help, the problem is right in front of us. But thanksgiving requires us to stop, look back, and recognise what God has already done.

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits.

Psalm 103:2

Asking focuses on what we lack; gratitude focuses on what we have received

Sometimes we keep asking because our eyes are fixed on the next problem, the next need, or the next breakthrough. Gratitude opens our eyes to yesterday’s mercy.

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Thanksgiving requires humility

To give thanks is to admit, ‘I did not do this by myself.’ Gratitude protects us from the dangerous illusion of self-sufficiency.

But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18

Thanksgiving gives glory back to God

Thanksgiving is not just good manners. It is an act of worship.

The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies Me

Psalm 50:23

A Simple Gratitude Exercise

Take one minute and answer these questions.

  1. When God answers my prayers, do I return to thank Him, or do I quickly move to the next request?
  2. What are three specific things God has done for me in the last one year that I must not forget?
  3. Have I become so focused on what is still missing that I have failed to honour God for what He has already provided?
  4. Is there a testimony I have kept silent about because I was embarrassed, afraid, or too busy?
  5. What good deed can I do today as an act of thanksgiving?

Lord, Thank You

Today, before asking God for anything new, pause and say:

“Lord, thank You. I remember what You have done. I know I did not get here by myself. You have been faithful.”
